In Benefits Q&A

The federal government recently announced an increase in the Employment Insurance maximum insurable earnings amount, along with a corresponding increase in the weekly maximum benefit. Effective January 1, 2026, maximum insurable earnings will increase to $68,900 per year for an insured worker. As a result, the new maximum EI benefit amount will be $729 per week.

For workers in Quebec, the EI premium rate remains different because the province administers its own parental and maternity benefits through the Quebec Parental Insurance Plan.

Short term disability plans that have a maximum set at the EI maximum, rather than a fixed dollar amount, will automatically increase on January 1, 2026.
